Full course description

Christmas wasn’t always entirely cheerful.

In Victorian Britain, winter nights were perfect for fireside tales of ghosts, omens, spirits, and strange encounters. Charles Dickens helped make this tradition famous with A Christmas Carol, but he was part of a much larger fascination with the supernatural during the holiday season.

In this session of Weird Wednesdays After Dark, we’ll explore the unusual connection between Christmas and ghost stories, from Dickens and Victorian spiritualism to winter folklore, old seasonal traditions, and the eerie stories families once told by the fire.

We’ll look at why the supernatural fit so naturally into the Victorian Christmas—and how pieces of that tradition still survive today.

Think of it as Christmas with the lights turned down.

Because nothing says “Happy Holidays” quite like a good ghost story.
